"...the consistency of findings from these school-based studies with the findings from homes, offices, and other buildings strengthens the case for adverse health effects in damp and moldy schools....approximately 4.6 million cases of asthma in the USA result from exposure to dampness and mold ... the resulting economic cost of this health impact is approximately $3.5 billion annually." Portsmouth School Gets $3.7M to Address Mold
It is important that schools use appropriate remediation when dealing with mold issues, in order to avoid making the problem worse by spreading the mold or causing more fungus to become airborne. (SMH)
Lakeview Elementary School has received $3.7 million in federal stimulus money to address humidity and mold problems that have contributed to asthma in students.
Asthma among elementary students in Portsmouth has increased 25 percent over the past two years, according to a statement from U.S. Sens. Jim Webb and Mark Warner and Rep. Bobby Scott.
The money will be used to replace the school's roof, ceilings, windows, doors and venting system. The fixes are expected to save the city's school system more than $6,000 a year in energy costs, according to a news release from the legislators.
